An art piece created for school work. It has a long description so get comfortable...

Introduction:

There’s one thing that bugs me about my religion. So much emphasis is placed on rules. Here are some examples:

• No swimming on the Sabbath.
• Only certain types of music are OK.
• No Business on the Sabbath.

But I also understand why so much emphasis is placed on the rules. Because rules are easier to understand than concepts. Rules can be taught and followed easily. Concepts cannot. They are much harder to grasp. But here’s the dilemma. It’s the concepts that matter.

Many people miss the point. They think that Christianity is all about the rules.

If only they know what I know.

If rules are followed too strictly, it actually becomes harder than just following the original concept.

Don’t get me wrong. Rules were created for a reason. My piece is just a reminder that Rules are not the only way. So don’t become a modern Pharisee.

About the Piece:

I’ve put the 10 Commandments in, because they are a clear symbol of religious rules. All the small silhouette people are attempting to climb to the top, to conquer the rules, to reach perfection. But none are able to do it. It is just too high. Some climb high, but are unable to go higher still. Some even fall. Many can’t even start.

This is where the two main characters come in. The character on the left is looking at the commandments. He is unsure of whether or not to try and conquer the rules. The character on the right is Jesus. He is also looking at the commandments, but more specifically, the people on them. They put in huge amounts of effort for absolutely nothing. He drops the comment, ‘But I’ve already done the hard work’.

The left character could represent anyone. It could be you, one of your friends, or maybe some random person. It doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is the decision. Will you let rules rule you, or will you choose the alternative?

Technical details:

This piece Created in Macromedia flash 8. It’s not intended to be animated. I just thought that I’d better mention that in case the question popped up in your mind.

The original plan was drawn by hand, and then scanned into flash, where the digital work began.

The finished piece has 5 separate layers for keeping different parts of the image separate. It’s a tidiness thing.

Ok, and for those of you who are wondering why I'm talking like a n00b, it's because of my intended audience. Tech n00bs...

Ah, I really love this piece. It's so simple, but that's the point, isn't it? One thing that hits me Jesus saying "But I've already done the hard work..." I don't know. Just the concept and pic work well together to define something so many miss. Awesome job. *faves*

I'm atheist, so I have no organized collection of guidelines, just my morals, shaped by family, teachers, and experiences.

With a set of rules so monumental that no one can climb them, it makes me wonder how anyone managed to carve the rules into the stone in the first place

Well, it's good to have morals.

You do have a point there. God created the original commandments, so I could say the same about these. Still, I might need to rethink the concept...
